STAFF from Wolferstans solicitors swapped their suits for shorts and t-shirts to compete in a multi-sports challenge against members of Special Olympics Plymouth and District.

A team of more than 20 Wolferstans employees went head to head with competitors from the organisation, which provides sports coaching and facilities for people with learning disabilities.

The day-long challenge saw competitors battle it out on the five-a-side football pitch, bowling mats and rowing machines at Plymouth’s YMCA Kitto Centre.

Boccia and new age curling were also added to the schedule as experienced club members took on the Wolferstans’ team in sports that some staff had never sampled before.

The overall winners on the day were members of the Special Olympics team.

Special Olympics Plymouth and District is part of Special Olympics Great Britain, which provides sports training and competition in Olympic-type sports for people with learning disabilities.

The Plymouth branch was established just over two years ago by Maureen and Alan Stockdale, from Plymstock, whose son has learning disabilities.

“The sports challenge was fabulous,” Maureen said, “everybody had a fantastic day.

“Wolferstans saw and treated this as a serious sporting event and treated our guys with the utmost respect.

“We did warn them that we were going go win!”

She added: “We want to give people in Plymouth the chance to take part in sport. For a fairly young club we have got four people being considered for the (Special Olympics) World Games in Los Angeles in 2015.

“Our ethos is that if you do not give people a go, how do you ever know what they can achieve?”
